A former co-founder Whitney Wolfe is suing Tinder

Whitney Wolfe, a former exec for Tinder, sues for sexual harassment

Whitney Wolfe, a former marketing vice-president for Tinder, is suing the famous dating-app service for discrimination and sexual harassment, making it the business of latest technology to get challenges over its treatment of females.

The lawsuit of Wolfe, filed on Monday US time, had a series of claimed incidents of harassment over approximately 18 months started in late 2012. Among the claims: that co-founders Sean Rad, a chief executive officer, and Justin Mateen, chief marketing officer for the company, removed her co-founder title because of gender; and that Mateen insulted her publicly, including calling her with swear words at a party of the company, while Rad ignored the complaints of Wolfe.

IAC/InterActiveCorp has a majority stake in based in Los Angeles Tinder, and assumes also as a defendant, together with fellow dating website and InterActiveCorp portfolio company Match.com.

IAC’s spokesman said that Justin Mateen had been suspended pending the ongoing internal investigation, thus called messages that he sent Wolfe as “inappropriate”.

“We definitely condemn these messages,” said the spokesman, “but believe that the allegations of Ms Wolfe with respect to the company and Tinder’ management are unfounded.”

Match and Tinder didn’t reply to the emails requesting comment.

Wolfe says in the lawsuit that she came up for the service with the name “Tinder” in mid-2012, just after its creation, at the time of worries that the original name of the company, Matchbox, was very similar to Match.com.

Also the lawsuit says that Wolfe was in romantic relationship with Justin Mateen, her boss, who in late 2012 joined the company.

Although in a November 2012 meeting she was designated as a co-founder, Mateen told Wolfe that having a “girl co-founder” cheapen the company, says the lawsuit. Mateen and Rad in November 2013 removed Wolfe’s co-founder title.

As their romance broke down, according to the suit, Justin Mateen named her “a desperate loser” during a marketing meeting and said Rad and other members that she was an alcoholic. Also it states that he sent her a lot of harassing texts. Wolfe complained to Sean Rad, who ignored her “or called her an emotional or dramatic girl”, says the suit, adding that in some meeting, Rad told that it was her job to “keep Justin calm”.
